Africa’s running machines to astound SuperSport viewers on DStv
Human running machines from African countries will again astound television viewers on Saturday when the world half-marathon championships are held in Nanning , China .
The almost unbelievable ability to run a distance of just over 21 km in less than an hour can be seen in live coverage of the men’s race, starting on SuperSport 5 at 2.45am.
Jaw-dropping performances by women who have been closing in on the 1-hour mark are also a certainty.
Zersenay Tadese is tipped to win the men’s race for an unprecedented fifth successive year. The wiry Eritrean, who set a world’s fastest time of 58 minutes 23 seconds in March, won in 59:35 last year. At 28 years of age, he is at his peak.
Tadese, widely regarded as the almost unbeatable Paul Tergat’s successor, won three world championship medals on different surfaces last year.
However, he has to deal with a Kenyan onslaught from Wilson Kiprop, Silas Kipruto, Sammy Kirop, Titus Kwemoi and Moses Cheruiyot who have al run the distance in under an hour.
The Kenyans won the men’s team title in Birmingham last year. Eritrea took second place and Ethiopia third, seconds ahead of the Americans. Giomar da Silva, of Brazil and Kenya ’s Kiplimo Kimutai and Sammy Kitwara are likely to challenge strongly again
Mary Keitany won the women’s title in a brilliant 1:06:36 last year, leading the Kenyans to another team victory. Depending on conditions, she could threaten Lornah Kiplagat’s world record of 1:06:25
· The individual winners in Nanning will receive US $30 000 in prize money. The winning teams will collect $15 000.
